Thinking out the blocks

Who is this course for?

This 2-day workshop is aimed at inspiring physiotherapists and occupational therapists who want to get creative with simple equipment. Perhaps you're starting out, looking for new ideas, wanting to gain further confidence in clinical reasoning, or want to challenge yourself with some out-the-box thinking. Perhaps you've been a therapist for a while, and you love solving cases but you find that you'd like to bounce around with some new ideas so that you keep expanding your mindset.

Wherever you are on your journey, you will be guided through a creative thinking process that will help you unpack your therapy bag so that you can repack it, making space for some new ideas.

What will you learn?

Adaptability! Creativity! Resourcefulness! Simplicity! Teamwork! Confidence!

The workshop will centre around 28 case studies, with opportunities to brainstorm simple yet effective treatment plans, experiment with equipment, present solutions, and work within unexpected constraints. Through these case studies, we will also revise conditions and discuss important aspects of assessment and treatment, as well as referral opportunities with our colleagues.

You will go through a process of ethical decision making, helping you determine outcomes for different ethical dilemmas.

What are the case studies about?

  • 7 x Neurological Cases
  • 5 x Orthopaedic / Musculoskeletal Cases
  • 5 x Sensory Processing / Austism Spectrum Disorder Cases
  • 4 x Genetic / Metabolic Disorder Cases
  • 3 x Post-surgical / Rehabilitation Cases
  • 4 x Behavioural / Functional Cases

What can you expect?

With 24 participants, this is not only a great networking opportunity, but an opportunity to work in a team to grow your clinical reasoning. There will be colleagues with various levels of experience, and this will provide for an enriching problem-solving workshop with different perspectives. You can expect to be challenged by many of the case studies and the internal reflection that results, followed by the excitement and celebration of ideas and teamwork. You can expect to leave this workshop feeling refreshed and ready to think out the blocks with your clients.

What equipment will we use?

Square or rectangular blocks, wedges and rollers! Most case studies will require the use of only one item, so you'll really have to choose wisely and get creative to find ways to achieve your client goals. There is a large practical component, so plenty of opportunity to try out new ideas, as well as present these to the group and hear some suggestions.

What else should I know?

You will receive a workbook with theoretical and practical components, including all 28 case studies so that you can make notes.

You will also receive a block or a wedge to take home.

It is advisable to wear comfortable clothing for practical sessions, as well as for sitting on the floor.

Both days are compulsory for an attendance certificate.
